Active arc fault protection

Power Arc Reduction Technology

PART for medium-voltage

In the medium-voltage range, arcing protection is provided by high-performance thyristors. Our new electronic PART Multimaster recording and analysis unit uses a high-speed bus to send a trigger pulse to the trigger module using high-performance thyristors.

The signal arriving at the gate makes the thyristor barrier layer conductive, and causes a saturated short which takes the energy out of arcing. The whole process from detecting the arcing to tripping the thyristor takes no more than approx. 2 ms. This innovative safety system was designed to be used in KÖHL KMP-A series in plug-in technology, but can also be integrated with other makes of system.

PART for low voltage

Our new arcing protection system for low-voltage switchgear units is based on KÖHL's specially designed PART Multimaster recording and analysis unit. Combined with the proven ARCON or DEHNshort shorting device, gives the new PART arcing protection system.

KÖHL combines the extended requirements of personal and plant protection with its new PART arcing protection system by using a combination of physical background (the speed of light) and the latest findings in power electronics. The light flash characteristic of arcing is detected by the fibre optic elements fitted and integrated in the sectional part of the switchgear unit, and if there is a massive power surge, this trips a working chain in our innovative electronic PART Multimaster recording and analysis unit.

This system shorts the busbars in a low-voltage distribution system when tripped by the recording and analysis unit, reducing arcing time to less than 2 ms, reducing the energy impact considerably.

The system is only fouled to a minor extent, so can be back in operation much faster.
